Course description

This course is suitable for students who have completed German 5 or equivalent (a minimum of 80 hours).
The emphasis is on learning the practicalities of the German language to allow you to engage in conversations about yourself and situations in everyday life. All four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be practised every lesson. The course will continue with German 7 in the following term.

What your course will cover

You will cover chapters 16 -18 of the text listed above.
In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere you will learn:

  • The use of the comparative and superlative.
  • How to book a hotel room.
  • Describe the location of buildings. (Das Hotel liegt hinter der Kirche).
  • More about the dative and accusative. (Wir stellen die Vase auf den Tisch).
  • More about adjectival endings.
  • How to talk about the clothes you are wearing. (Ich trage einen schwarzen Mantel).
  • How to read/write invitations to various events.
  • How to ask for help and advice.
  • Use of indirect objects.
  • A new German proverb every week.

Resources used include German songs, poems and rhymes as well as other authentic materials such as photos, brochures, cards, recipes, newspaper clippings and objects.

You will get the most out of your language studies if you do a little review at home – a little bit often is best.

What to bring

  • a pen and notebook
  • a folder for any handouts (an A4 folder with plastic sleeves is good)
  • Text book/CD : Teach Yourself Complete German" by Paul Coggle and Heiner Schenke (ISBN: 9781444177398)
