Course description

This course is suitable for beginners who have never studied German before. The emphasis is on learning the basics of the German everyday language to allow you to engage in conversations about yourself using short sentences. All four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be practised every lesson. The course will continue with German 2 in the following term depending of enrolment numbers . Text purchase required.

What your course will cover

In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere, based on chapters 1-4 of your text, you will learn:

  • pronunciation and spelling rules of the German language
  • to recognise and use appropriate greetings (guten Morgen, gute Nacht, danke schön, bitte schön).
  • to introduce yourself (Hallo, ich heiße Anja. Ich wohne in Hobart. Ich komme aus Berlin).
  • how to make questions using question words (wie, wo, wer, woher, wieviel).
  • how to address people in a polite manner, using the –Sie- form.
  • asking people how they are and expressing how you are. (Wie geht’s?).
  • talking about where people work and/or study. (meine Frau arbeitet bei Zeiss).
  • numbers from 0 – 100.
  • days of the week, months of the year, seasons, colours.
  • about German and European geography.

Resources used include German song, proverbs and rhymes as well as other authentic materials such as photos, recipes, newspaper clippings and objects.

What to bring

  • Pen and note book for work done in class.
  • A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
  • German/English dictionary (optional)
  • The multi media pack: Teach Yourself Complete German ISBN 9781444177398 – Book & CD set; 1st ed, 2012 (CD is optional)

Please do not worry if you do not have the book for the first lesson. Your tutor is aware that this sometimes happens.

Important information

  • Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying a book that may be of no use to you then please check the viability of your class with adult education before purchasing your text.

Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.
