Course description

This course is suitable for students who have a general knowledge of French grammar (ie: 300 hours of Adult Education French, level A2.2 of CEFR achieved, 1st year at Uni completed). In this course, you will consolidate the grammar learned to date and gain greater oral skills, conversing in French on a wide range of topics. Students joining this class should be familiar with all the French tenses of verbs. Only part of the time is spent in conversation, this is not a conversation class as such.

What your course will cover

  • In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, students are encouraged to speak and interact in French in class most of the time,
  • Improvement of speaking and listening skills with lots of practice of conversation about a wide range of cultural topics
  • Listening, reading, translating exercises from selected texts to enhance comprehension, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and cultural awareness

Please, be aware that there may be variations in the standard of French within the group.

What to bring

  • Pen and notebook for work done in class.
  • A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
  • Any French verb book (or tool).
  • Small French/English dictionary (or tool) you may have (eg Collins, Robert).

Important information

  • The Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages and is divided in 4 levels

A1 level (Adult Education French 1, French 2, French 3, French 4, French 5, French 6, French 7 & French 8) completed within around 130 hours (levels A1.1 – A1.2 & A1.3): students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.

A2 level (A2.1 to A2.4) (Adult Education French Intermediate – Encore du français ! Levels A2.1, A2.2 & A2.3), completed within around 130 hours: students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects

B1 level (B1.1 to B1.7) (Adult Education French advanced – Toujours plus de français ! - Levels A2.4 & B1), completed within around 200 hours: students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers

B2 level (Adult Education French conversation): students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.

  • Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol.
  • Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity

Cancellations and Refunds
Please choose your course carefully. A full refund of your enrolment fee is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
