French 3 - (CEFR A1.1)

Course description

This course is the continuation course from French 2 and will mainly focus on describing your family, using possessive pronouns and using the verbs in ‘-er’ present tense to talk about daily activities. This course is suitable for students who have completed in the textbook the chapters of French 1 and French 2 (see :“What to bring”), or equivalent (32 hours of tuition). All four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be practised every lesson.

What your course will cover

In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere, this course will cover the following chapters of the textbook, in this order:
Chapter 21: J’ai 15 ans, il a 20 ans
Chapter 22: Mon sac, ma valise, mes bagages
Chapter 26: Il fait froid en hiver, il fait chaud en été
Chapter 3: Je parle français, j’habite à Paris
Chapter 14: Je travaille à Paris, j'étudie le français

You will mainly learn:

  • To describe your family
  • To use the verbs of the first group (ending in -er) to talk about daily activities (je parle français, j’habite à Paris, j'étudie le français...)

You will learn the following grammar:

  • Verbs ending in ‘-er’, present tense (parler, travailler ...)
  • Possessive pronouns (votre livre, mon café ...)
  • Talking about countries and towns (en France, à Paris...)

What to bring

  • Pen and notebook for work done in class.
  • A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
  • Textbook: Grammaire progressive du français – niveau débutant complet (book including an audio CD) - Authors: Maïa Grégoire & Alina Kostucki – ISBN:9782090381566
  • Please note – Grammaire progressive du français is a full collection of books so please ensure that you purchase the niveau débutant complet book by the 2 authors (as above) with the cream cover
  • This textbook is used from French 1 to French 8 sessions (128 hours of tuition in total), achieving the A1 level of CEFR (see more information about the CEFR below)
  • The chapters are studied in the following order, from French 1 to French 8 (with eventual marginal fluctuation, depending on the pace of each group):

French 1: Chapters 1 – 2 – 10 – 4 – 5
French 2: Chapters 6 – 24 – 11 – 13 (first part only) - 19
French 3: Chapters 21 – 22 – 26 – 3 – 14
French 4: Chapters 25 – 15 – 16 – 17 – 18 – 32 – 7 – 8
French 5: Chapters 9 – 12 – 13 (second part) - 27 – 34 – 35 – 46 – 28
French 6: Chapters 30 – 31 – 20 – 42 – 33
French 7: Chapters 43 – 23 – 45 – 44 – 37
French 8: Chapters 38 – 36 – 29 – 39 – 40 – 41

Important information

  • Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying a book that may be of no use to you then please check the viability of your class with Adult Education before purchasing your textbook.
  • The program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF

The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:

A1 level, (adult education French 1, French continuation 2 ...) completed within around 120 hours (A1.1 – A1.2 & A1.3): students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.

A2 level (adult education French intermediate oral skills) completed within around 100 hours (A2.1 to A2.4): students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects

B1 level (adult education French advanced oral skills) completed within around 200 hours (B1.1 to B1.7): students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers

B2 level (adult education French conversation): students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.

  • Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.

Cancellations and Refunds
Please choose your course carefully. A full refund of your enrolment fee is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
