Course description

This course is designed for the beginner in calligraphy. Students will learn to use traditional writing equipment and traditional techniques in producing works of calligraphy. You will learn about the different range of materials and equipment as well as the fascinating background in the history of calligraphy. Of course, you will also learn how to use dip pen and ink!

What your course will cover

  • The fascinating history of calligraphy
  • Correct use of dip pens of three different sizes
  • Construction of Foundational hand
  • Construction of Italic hand
  • Construction of Gothic hand
  • Construction of Iombardic capitals and basic illumination

Course prerequisites

No prior experience required

What to bring

  • Ruler with both imperial and metric markings
  • Container for water
  • Small tin of watercolour paint with fine brush
  • B pencil
  • Eraser
  • Chinese black ink
  • Tutor will have spare hot pressed paper and pen nibs for first lesson to show students what else is required
